You have to be careful with how you word this. You can’t go to a depressed friend and tell them to just stop being depressed and choose to be happy. Help them see the positive points of their life and encourage a change of perspective that way. Happiness is a choice, but we can’t always see that. Be nurturing to those going through tough times.

I have been homeless with my husband and 4 kids for 9 months now. Floating between friends’ couches, motel rooms, tents, and my in-laws’ travel trailer in their driveway. My husband can’t find steady work, I have two toddlers to care for (otherwise, I’d be looking for paid work, also), our situation is crappy, we have been lucky to keep our two family dogs thus far (but will likely have to give them to a shelter in order to get a place of our own), we are on food stamps. We have little to be happy about, but I’m happy.… Read more »

I don’t know why this is bullshit…but it is.
Sometimes you can’t choose to be happy.
Sometimes things happen and you’re not going to be happy about them.
Am I happy that I am going into a blizzard with an empty truck and trailer? No.
But I like my job and do it anyway.

Maybe some people are just not meant to be happy?! it does not mean that they can’t enjoy life or see the good things in it, but I think some souls out there are just “sad souls” and they will stay that way no matter what; they just survive!

There are so many angry depression comments but this post was just good advice to people who don’t have depression. It in no way even touched the topic of depression. It would be good if people could remember that not everyone in the world has real clinical depression, and those who don’t suffer from it do have a choice in their happiness

Right. I’m just gonna *believe* myself into better brain chemistry. And then I’ll tell my dad he can just *think his way* into stable blood sugar. Yayyyy positivity!

Mmmmm, my rampant depression and other disorders call bullshit on this.

This is 100% correct, I found out the hard way. But I did find out.

tell that to my crippling clinical depression

Argh! This is too simplified. Tell this to anyone with anxiety or depression and it’s just more pressure for them. It’s almost like telling them to “just get over it”. It’s great if you can choose it but not a simple thing to do.

That’s not entirely true. Another being can bring you happiness. Take my dog as an example. When I was at my lowest point and was ready to end it all, I adopted a pit bull puppy and raised her. She literally turned my life around.

Only you can control your self thoughts. Meds help def. but you have to tell yourself when the negative thoughts come it isn’t true. You have to be your own cheerleader or it’s very easy for another person to put you down too. Sometimes it’s exhausting and overwhelming and sometimes you say screw it and wallow but ultimately no one else can give it to you.

Depression is most commonly caused by a chemical imbalance which places it in the disease category. However a chemical imbalance is most likely caused but poor diet, lack of motivation which is inherently mental, and of course poor choice of mental stumulation. I learned all this from experience both personal and from the outside view.

I really wish people would stop saying this. Happiness is largely dependent on the individual and the circumstances surrounding them, which are not always within their control. Your mental/physical health plays a huge part, your financial situation could play another large part, you could have problems with one or more relationships in your life, etc.

Many of these variables are hard to change or might not ever be able to be changed, like a mental health issue. Happiness is not a choice, it’s a feeling that has a different definition depending on who you’re speaking to.

I find this extremely insulting. Happiness is not a choice for those with depression, anxiety, etc. Yes, meds and therapy can help. But saying one can just CHOOSE to be happy is incredibly ignorant.

Everyone talking about their depression problems… I’m not saying it is a choice of course not, but it is possible to get better. If you have a better mindset does make a bit of a difference I swear. And yes, I did have depression in the past and big anxiety problems etc.(not gonna reveal all my issues here!) So don’t say I can’t understand if I didn’t live it. But since the last 2 years, I’ve worked really hard on myself and my way of thinking and bringing positive into my life. I haven’t had anxiety in months. Which is… Read more »

Important to note that this statement is correct but only to those who don’t suffer from mental illnesses. You can’t just approach someone who is suffering from depression and ask them to just decide to be happy. Their depression is not their fault.

Than you must be a sick person if you are able to decide to be happy person, if people around you are dieing from war activities, suffering from poverty because of capitalistic or any other non perfect social system. WTF is this decide to be happy…take a pill and be happy…why people are making such posts… WHY they dont write straight ahead … BE IGNORANT!!!

Did you know there’s a nerve in your brain that if damaged makes you unable to feel happiness or pleasure, while leaving the sedum emotions perfectly in tact? Sure sounds like a choice to me! (Sarcasm)

You know what’s also a choice? Ignorance is bliss. Denial. Turning a blind eye… Playing pretend. Lying to yourself! Spreading abelist-minded cult-enabling mind-enslaving doctrine!

Not true, I used to thought so but that led me down a miserable spiral of how I should be happy, should appreciate things, but now I just realise that I’m human and things are not perfect and that have made me so much more happy ^_^

Happiness does come from within but its certainly a lot more complex than just ‘choosing it’ telling someone with depression to think positively or stop moaning isn’t useful… Its not as simple as this…

I have had PTSD since I was 3. I have a slight chemical imbalance. I lived in Deep depression for Years. I fought with anxiety for a while. I took meds, went to therapy, found God, talked to friends, read books, meditated, etc. I cried, cussed, screamed, asked why, felt unworthy, contemplated death. I finally allowed my pain to become my strength….I used it to help me hide while I fought and changed. There Is no magic here….just hard work. You can learn to love you, you can learn to be happy, you can learn to love others…I know. My… Read more »
