I hate this quote. It’s usage is about removing personal responsibility. If someone loves you, they would of course put up with you “at your worst”, but it’s your personal responsibility to not be “at your worst” and to care enough about others to not subject them to it.
The quote suggests that those you love shouldn’t abandon you when the going gets tough, but it gets used as an excuse to act terribly often, as if it’s some kind of test.

I don’t think it’s a matter of being deserved or not. To me it’s a matter of compatability. Some people have no tolerance for selfishness, impatience and insecurity. You may be at your worst or you may be at your best but if the other person won’t accept you for you that’s just how it goes.
